What's the point?
This is a set of values that seems underrepresented. It seems there's great value in knowing we are not alone, and that in fact, our numbers are great.
If and when the signators reach 100,000 we'll poll the people who've signed it - what should we do with all these sharedvoices? Form a political action committee? A new party?
For now, it's just a way to say "Finally - someone who agrees with me."
What's the site's history?
SharedVoice.org was started a few days after 9/11 by a handful of volunteers who, in the process of dealing with incomprehensible destruction and a feeling of helplessness decided to DO something. The first step in asking what we could do was to ask "Well, what DO we do?". As internet professionals, the answer was clear - make a website.
An initial email went out to a couple hundred friends, and over the course of time, around 4,000 people signed the original statement. A revised statement is about to be released, reflecting a broader set of values and concerns.
Since then, the site's instigator, Ian Rhett has quit technology marketing, taken up songwriting, lives in San Francisco and is maintaining the site.
What's with the revision?
The first statement was a reaction to the events of 9/11 and the looming and inevitable military response. It was written in the days immediately following that terrible day. The revision is an attempt to articulate a set of values that seem to be shared by a lot of people (sharedvoice, get it?), but that don't seem to be getting much attention.
What happens to my name & email?
First of all, nothing's going to happen to your email address. You won't get on any lists by signing this, other than the sharedvoice.org list. You may occasionally receive updates about SharedVoice.org, and you'll always be able to turn off those messages if you want.
What if I'm not a US Citizen? Can I still sign the statement?
You sure can. Just uncheck "I am eligible to vote in the United States" box, mate.
